John's post about [Andrew Sullivan losing his fucking mind] is missing only one thing; namely a good hard look at the moral universe that enables this trash:
"If health insurance for all, an end to the Iraq War, an end to torture and illegal wiretapping, and a sane energy policy can be obtained at the price of destroying one teenage girl, her family, and the surrendering our self-respect I see that as a cheap trade."Read: "You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs." Of course, now that moral cowardice is a bipartisan problem it's a little hard for me to get preachy from my right-wing pulpit.
Here's another post from a DailyKos commentator:
"What choice do we have? When faced with monsters, we have to be monstrous ourselves."I hope I'm not the only one who is jarred by a person who is presumably opposed to torture using the exact same arguments employed in defence of torture.
As somebody who's done his conservative credentials no good by spending the last few months attacking the lunacy and depravity of the American right, it's good to remember that the American left is equally loony and depraved. Alasdair MacIntyre once said that in modern democracies, "politics is civil war carried on by other means." Here's hoping that none of these trolls ever decide that I or my loved ones are appropriate sacrifices for whichever cause they happen to champion.
